My Tip for This Week: Part of Education Is Being Prepared
According to the American Diabetes Association, people who have diabetes will spend an average of $13,243 a year on health care expenses (keeping in mind that total can be a lot higher if something goes wrong). Most diabetics will at some time need help paying some of the bills, so it’s a good idea to make sure stay apprised of any governmental and/or nongovernmental programs that exist to help you.
Various government programs and agencies now provide essential tools for managing and treating your diabetes. Medicare now includes coverage for glucose monitors, test strips, and lancets as well as some medical nutrition therapy services. Diabetes self-management training, education, therapeutic shoes, glaucoma screening, and flu and pneumonia shots are also covered.
Nongovernmental support is available in every community. From transportation to technological assistance, from prosthetics to prescriptions, a simple search of your community should yield services, support groups, and resources for every need you may have. Local clubs like the Lions, Shriners, Rotary clubs, or religious organizations make their assistance available to both children and adult diabetes sufferers. The point is: You never have to feel as though you cannot get what you need. Reach out and educate yourself along the way, and maybe even volunteer at some of these organizations to get a sense of how they deal with people—a little time spent time today could make the difference tomorrow.

To some people, continuing education has an undeserved reputation for being all about “community birdhouse-making night classes.” In reality, the topic of continuing education covers a broad spectrum of learning activities and programs, which can even include degree courses and career training. Many fields requires a certain number of continuing education hours to be completed each year so that employers can ensure you are up to date on the latest techniques and development in your field. One of the most common fields in which continuing education is demanded is the field of medicine.
As studies and discoveries change the protocols for everything from dosages to diagnoses, medical personnel must stay current in order to provide the best care. Using outdated techniques can sometimes cause more harm than good, and if there is a better solution for treatment, it is only through constant study that it will be developed. Furthermore, it never hurts to get a “refresher” on the basics—things you do everyday without thinking can sometimes become dangerous if you aren’t thinking about them. One of the medical conditions that can benefit most from the most continuing education is diabetes. As studies are done, new strides can be taken with this disease, including general treatment and diabetic care.
As a diabetic, it is smart to consider it your obligation—as well as your health providers’—to continually educate yourself, not only with how to build a better birdhouse but how enjoy better nutrition, how to communicate better with doctors and nurses, and how to take better care of your body so that your diabetes does not become life-threatening. Most continuing education courses are geared toward making your career more fulfilling and productive—why not apply that to your life and health as well?

In case you didn’t know, the primary cause of legal blindness in the working population of the United States today is diabetes mellitus. Of the fourteen million Americans with this health issue, it is estimated that a diabetic is 25 times more likely to go blind than a person in the general population. In fact, some sources say that vision impairment is occasionally already present in many newly diagnosed cases of diabetes. The unfortunate thing is that most vision impairment due to diabetes can be averted.
As always—the most important safeguard is to monitoring of your blood sugar closely. With prolonged high blood sugar levels, it is possible to develop a condition called retinopathy in which capillaries lose their ability to carry essential nutrients to the retina. According to the National Institutes of Health, diabetic retinopathy causes 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness each year. In its early stages, there are few physical symptoms, which is why it is so essential for diabetics to have annual dilated eye exams. Proper care of your overall health—as well as making sure your eyes are regularly evaluated—can make a tremendous difference in the quality of your life.
